Anonymous: This is NOT a marion question so feel free not to answer, but I was just wondering, what's ur opinion on Jessica Chastain? I'm trying to get into her films and while IA that she's a fucking legend & rlly cute on facebook, she just seems SO crazy oversensitive in her interviews? Maybe magazines really hate her and she's just bad in print but her one VF interview about crying all the time made me want to slap her. I think you met her tho so pls tell me she's better in real life at least?

Don’t worry, I’m not solely a Marion blog and I have a lot of other interests so feel free to ask whatever you like :)

LOL I like this ask a lot. Well, obviously I’m a little biased because like you’ve said I have met her but I think she’s great, but I do like to tease her a bit. She’s a wonderful actress and I’m very glad I was able to watch all of her films that came out in 2011 on the big screen and organically come to be a fan of her’s rather than it being shoved in my face as a fad later.

She’s really a genuinely sweet person who’s very kind to her fans, that I can say for sure. Even when tired and it’s late or cold, she treats people with respect, which is pretty apparent from her FaceBook as well. If you are ever lucky enough in the future to meet her, I think you’d have a great encounter with her. She’s very bubbly and she likes to touch people — like little rubs of her fingers on your back or shoulders especially if you’re nice to her/she can tell you’re a little nervous to meet her. And she’ll give hugs. She’s very attentive and bright so yeah, she’s pretty wonderful in real life.

I understand what you mean by the interviews/magazine comments. And I think that comes from how in our society if someone is really popular and seems to ~come out of nowhere~, most of us will think there’s something bad about them and try to bring them down for no reason other than their success(es). Jessica has worked very hard for 20ish years to get where she is today, it’s not like 2011 was her first year ever of working. And yes, she’s a very emotional person and can talk about herself more than we’ve come to see in other actors, and that might come off as overbearing to people. Or the fact she wants to be known as an actor rather than an actress, which might come off as cocky. But I think she has a right to feel to express herself and it’s up to the magazine’s writer/editing team to decide how they want to show her to the public.

Also, she’s a private person in a public age with a high profile career. She has tried to hide things about herself (age, family) that some people have a desire to find and expose. She’s trying to protect herself while making herself more marketable and it’s tricky. But people shouldn’t give her shit for it. It’s so dumb, just let her be.

I will say that my “relationship” with Jessica is one of “I support you to bits but I will make fun of you” demeanor. Like, she used to not say her age (she’s 36 if you’re wondering) for whatever reason and my friends and I turned it into a joke, like that she was born five hundred years ago, her first play was Our American Cousin so The Heiress was her first return to theatre ever since Lincoln was shot, she’s Meryl Streep’s mother, etc. But we love her, so it’s just for laughs. Like I wouldn’t be rude to her face…. I tried….. I couldn’t do it.

Some of her quotes come off so odd, I will admit. My favorite one is

“Every night I whisper to myself, ‘You chose this, Jessica. You chose this. This is what you wanted to do your whole life.’ ”

image

which is HILARIOUS because I just imagine her standing in front of her mirror every day screaming at herself YOU CHOSE THIS YOU WANTED TO DO THISSSSS JESSSSSICAAAAAAA like some demonic horror movie scene or something.

So basically, she’s a very bright person. Don’t think she’s an idiot, lol. She’s also very loving but I get where people might think she’s oversensitive. She possibly is. In my opinion, you should search YT and watch her interviews rather than read them because she comes off much better in video for. And we get lovely gifs of her face with them!

(dummy) ((jk pls don’t hurt me))

ALSO YES SHE CRIES A LOT BUT it’s fine.

She’s a cutie. It’s okay if you want to slap her though, I want to slap her too (on the butt).

Anonymous: What are your favorite marion pics?

Oh this is such a strenuous question, lol. I have many many pictures of her that I really love in all different categories. But how about just 5, yes? :D

These two photos I count as one because I love everything about them (well, the whole photoshoot they’re from in general) but I can never decide which I like better, so they’re both my #1:

Anonymous: I just started following you a few months ago. Did you write any posts about meeting Jessica? If not, how & when?

Hi! I’ve met Jessica like… three/fourish times on several occasions. All stage door when she was doing The Heiress in NYC. The first time was last November right after I heard Marion speak at her TimesTalk (consolation prize post). Then this past January I went back to NYC for a weekend and actually saw Jessica in the play along with Jessie (who was with me during November’s trip), Lyly, and Elanor’s lovely sister Gala (Jennifer also came with Jessie and I to Marion’s TimesTalk and we hung out with her a lot in January/met Jessica stage door with her but she didn’t come with us to the play). I made several post about that weekend here, here, here, and here. Just look at my archive from January if you want :)

long story short: stage door at her play in the midst of the best few months of her career so far where we could run to the theater to see her movies and run back to see her irl (´◠ω◠`)

Anonymous: Why do you think Nolan ruined Marion?

please read this whole reply because I took time to write it thx

I feel like I get into a big discussion about Nolan/his treatment of women/his treatment of Marion every few months and it always ends with people getting upset or cursing at me, and I’ve had a lot of that recently, so I’ll say this once and clearly so we don’t have to go over this again and again (not blaming you, anon, you most likely have never read my thoughts about this topic so you’re all good).

For the most part, I enjoy Christopher Nolan’s films. I adore TDK (mostly because of Heath but still) and Inception was one of the first movies that really hit me that movies could really be wonderful and because of that movie, it’s why I have watched as many as I have now. But his treatment of women in his movies pretty much sucks. All his movies deal with main male leads that mimic himself (straight, white, over all attractive~, most of them have wealth and privilege) and the main cause of their pain and suffering deals with the women in their lives. Their wives/girlfriends/love interests all die, some in terrible ways, and their death is the catalyst for the movie’s plot.

But that’s just it: the women are merely part of the plot. They are not their own character. I’ll stick to the two characters Marion has played (for the sake of time) in his films - Mal in Inception and Miranda/Talia in TDKR. Mal is *literally* just a figment of Dom’s imagination. She is not a person. She is not real. She’s a part of the plot. Obviously she’s played by an actual human being, but her actions are manifestations of Dom’s subconscious and there’s nothing that she does that is because of her own intentions.

In this case, I don’t mind it because Inception (to me) really is a cool story and every character was a piece of a puzzle and it was interesting.

For TDKR, Miranda/Talia’s becomes a weak “character” because of her weak backstory/sideplot in that clusterfuck. And also, the movie is written so goddamn horribly that this reply is just going to be a paragraph of incoherence, lo siento. So Talia hates her father because he didn’t allow her savior Bane to be a part of the League of Shadows… YET… she is a part of this huge scheme to take down all of Gotham and kill Bruce Wayne… because it was a part of her father’s work… a father… who she hated… but she still completed his mission… because she hates him. Right.

She could have been a really awesome character (especially because imo, I reaaaaaaaally like how she was the CEO of Wayne Enterprises because she outsmarted Bruce… with her boobs. Which is FINE, whatever, I’ll fucking take it). But when it came time for her to ~be the villain~ it was so “womp womp” ‘cause she didn’t kick anyone, she didn’t fire a gun, there was no fighting, she didn’t get her hands dirty, nothing. No payoff.

Even when she was “good”, it was like, okay… you’re here. Do something. And then she’s “~bad~” and it’s like “wait…..where did you get that costume? Why aren’t you moving faster to destroy the city? Didn’t you make a more elaborate plan than a freakin’ bomb?? Why do you even want to kill Bruce LIKE JUST BECAUSE HE KILLED YOUR DAD… WHO YOU HATED… BUT WHY DOES THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO KILL HIM???”

Her actions don’t connect. She’s not her own person. She’s just an extra side-plot that wasn’t written well.

Also, here’s a tip, kids: if a movie’s ~epic climax~ involves stopping a bomb from exploding (and it’s not Die Hard 1 or 3) then there’s something wrong there.

The good thing about TDKR?

image

The short answer to all of this is that Nolan put in the worst fucking take of Marion’s death scene

image

(just focus on her…chest, it’ll be okay)

possible and it made people think she was a shitty actress and she should have her Oscar taken away and Guillaume stood up for her and people ragged on him but like YEAH. That’s basically it. From a woman who has died like 20 times in film (I mean LA VIE EN ROSE, PEOPLE!) this was the best take they got. Okay.

So, yeah. This is why I have very little hopes for Jessica in this new movie of his. Almost none whatsoever.

PS - Bane x Talia forever.

Anonymous: Word on the street is that Nolan is looking to cast Jessica Chastain in his next film. He's gonna ruin her like he did Marion :(

I envisioned you saying this as if we were in a noir film and it’s black and white and we were on a street corner in the middle of the night with only a street light to guide the shadows, my back’s the brick wall while you’re around the corner in a trench coat and hat, smoking, and you said this same phrase in this way:

“Word is….. [takes out cigarette] [lights cigarette with lighter] [takes a drag then puffs] Chastain’s gonna be in Nolan’s new film.”

Anyways, honey, I know. I was ranting for a full minute on twitter last night. It’s almost as if Nolan has a vendetta against me </3 Sigh. This is all pfffffffffffffffffffffft.

True facts about sloths [x]

I mean Asian describes an entire heterogenous continent so you should try to narrow done what you’re asking.

Oh I gotcha. Well, I just meant like if there were any popular directors with a well done catalogue of films that sprung to mind that you would like to recommend, or any films/actors that you think should definitely be checked out that are Asian, let me know, haha. I really just want to watch new movies and see new faces. So basically any movie from any Asian filmmaker that stood out to you that you would recommend… I know this is broad as fuuuuuck, sorry about that, I don’t know how to narrow it specifically :x

film discussion timeeeeee

Okay let’s talk about some films since a lot of y’all are on tonight.

#1 - I’ve been trying to expand my horizons and watch more Asian films. Besides War Kong Wai and Akira Kurosawa and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, what other directors would you recommend? What movies in general, from any Asian background, would you recommend?

#2 - Is the general view on Spike Lee is that Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X are his top two films and everything else pales in comparison? I’m jw.

#3 - What are your favorite queer films (primarily lesbian NOT “just a phase” bullshit) films that don’t end in complete misery?

????
